Brief History of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and its Statutory Background

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) was founded under the Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Act 2003 and authorised as an NHS Foundation Trust from 1 January 2005.

The Trust provides Children’s Services in North Yorkshire, County Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-On-Tees, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland and Wakefield, making it the largest provider by geographical area of such services in the country.  These are universal services where the needs and voice of children, young people and families are at the core of the service designed to identify and address their needs at the earliest opportunity, and to recognise and build on the strengths that are within individuals. This enables them to be part of the solution to overcome challenges and identify and develop resources within communities so that children, young people and families have access to support when and where they need it.

The Trust is also a provider of the following range of adult community services within the North East, Harrogate and the local areas:

  • Community Podiatry Services (North Yorkshire)
  • District and Community Nursing & Therapies (Harrogate and District)
  • Immunisation Services (North Yorkshire / Durham, Darlington and Teesside)
  • GP Out of Hours Services (Harrogate and District)

  • Safeguarding Children Services (across the NE and Northumberland)
  • Community Dental Services (North Yorkshire)
